Ben Youngs has shared the one thing he wishes could be different about his time with Leicester, as he prepares for his seventh Premiership final in an illustrious career.
The former England and British & Irish Lions scrum-half is set to retire at 35, but it’s not the end of his playing days that’s making him emotional ahead of next Saturday’s final at the Allianz. Instead, his main regret is that this match will mark the last time Leicester plays under the guidance of head coach Michael Cheika.
Cheika, who joined the Tigers last summer, announced in January that he would only be staying for one season before returning to Australia to be with his family. This decision has forced Leicester to search for a new head coach, ultimately appointing former Tigers forward Geoff Parling, who will take over after his commitments with the Wallabies.
Youngs expressed his disappointment at Cheika’s departure, praising the Australian’s immediate impact and leadership. “You want someone with presence, someone you can believe in, and Cheika is absolutely that,” Youngs told TNT Sports after Leicester’s semi-final victory over Sale. “He won the group over straight away. He’s been there, done it, and is someone you want to follow. It’s a shame it’s only for one year, but he’s done an incredible job.”
Youngs went on to say that Cheika ranks among the best coaches he’s ever worked with—a significant compliment from a player who debuted for Leicester in 2006 and has represented England and the Lions. “You never know how things will end, but I’m grateful I stayed on for another year. Cheika has been phenomenal—one of the best I’ve come across. I feel lucky to have played under him.”
Looking ahead to the final, Youngs emphasized the team’s belief and determination to win, highlighting the leadership of players like Handre Pollard. “We’re going to the final to win, and that’s the message.”
Cheika, in turn, praised Youngs for his influence on the team and the club, saying he was grateful to have another week working with him. He also reflected on the intensity of the semi-final win over Sale, noting the excitement and challenge of such a close contest.
