The Miami Dolphins’ offensive success hinges entirely on their quarterback. Unfortunately, their quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, doesn’t seem to fully grasp his importance to the team.
Speaking at a press conference, Tagovailoa reflected on how the 2024 season might have unfolded differently if he had made smarter decisions on the field. He specifically mentioned a play against Buffalo in Week 2, where a concussion sidelined him for four games.
However, in Week 15, Tua appeared to ignore—or simply disregard—the need to protect himself. On a 3rd-and-7 play in the first half, he scrambled and dived headfirst for a first down instead of sliding, absorbing a hit in the process. Though he avoided injury, the incident highlighted why the Dolphins must prioritize a strong backup quarterback this offseason.
If Tua truly cared about not letting his team down, he would heed his teammates’ repeated advice to slide. Instead, he lowered his head and charged into two defenders to gain an extra yard for a first down, a play ultimately negated by a penalty.
On that same play, Tua took a big hit to his rib cage. A slightly higher impact could have resulted in another blow to his helmet. Moments later, he was strip-sacked, leading to a Texans touchdown.

Fans and media alike were quick to criticize Tua Tagovailoa’s decision-making, highlighting his tendency for poor judgment in critical moments.
At some point, Tua is bound to take another hit, and when he does, it could spell the end of his career. He cannot continue to play recklessly and still expect to guide his team beyond a brief playoff appearance.
Unfortunately, Tagovailoa has yet to rein in his relentless determination to win. While admirable, he must learn to better assess game situations. Sacrificing his health for a first down early in a game is far from a smart play.
If nothing else, his risky style of play gives General Manager Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel even more incentive to draft a backup quarterback who can step in and lead the team should Tua be sidelined.
