The New York Yankees have reportedly agreed to trade veteran catcher to the Cincinnati Reds, per multiple reports on Friday evening.
Treviño, 32, spent the past three seasons with the Yankees and earned an All-Star nod in 2022. Last season, he appeared in 73 games, posting a .642 OPS with eight home runs and 28 RBIs. Known for his defensive skills, Treviño excelled in pitch framing during his All-Star campaign, though his throwing arm has been a liability. He ranked last among qualified catchers in throwing speed, prompting opposing teams to run more aggressively when he was behind the plate.
In return, the Yankees will receive right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson from the Reds. Cruz, 34, pitched in 69 games last season, recording a 4.86 ERA with 109 strikeouts over 66 2/3 innings. Jackson, who turns 29 next week, has played in 124 MLB games since his 2019 debut but carries a career OPS of .456.
Treviño’s role with the Yankees diminished last season as Austin Wells emerged as a promising option, likely to take over as the starting catcher in 2025.
