A significant injury update has surfaced regarding a key Leeds United player, previously labeled “crucial” by manager Daniel Farke.
Leeds Hit by Early Season Injury Woes
Just six games into the Premier League season, Leeds United have been plagued by injuries, with players like Ao Tanaka, Ethan Ampadu, Lucas Perri, and Wilfried Gnonto already sidelined. Ahead of their 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth, Farke revealed that Gnonto was still struggling with a calf injury, ruling him out and leading to Noah Okafor and Brenden Aaronson starting on the wings.
Jack Harrison came on for Okafor in the second half but made little impact, touching the ball only 11 times and failing to contribute a goal or assist in any of his five substitute appearances this season.
Farke had been hopeful for positive news on Daniel James, who was reportedly progressing in his recovery from an injury that kept him out of Leeds’ last two Premier League matches. However, journalist Adam Pope shared concerning news, stating:
“Multiple sources report that Leeds United winger Dan James suffered an injury in training, likely sidelining him for a significant period. Awaiting official club confirmation.
While the full extent of the injury is still unconfirmed, Graham Smyth reported that Leeds sources indicate James could be out for weeks rather than months, with the club clarifying:
“Daniel James has an ankle issue currently under assessment. Any absence is not expected to be long-term.” Craig Bellamy also confirmed it’s an ankle injury, not a severe ACL issue.
**James’ Absence a Major Blow for Farke**
Farke has previously highlighted James’ importance, praising his “crucial” work ethic after a standout performance against Watford during Leeds’ promotion campaign last season. Despite a slow start to the current season, with no goals or assists, the £75k-a-week winger was instrumental in Leeds’ return to the Premier League, contributing 21 goal involvements in the Championship.
James’ likely absence poses a challenge for Farke, and Leeds will need other forwards, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, to step up. Calvert-Lewin struggled in the Bournemouth match, missing three big chances before Eli Junior Kroupi’s late equalizer.
