Five days into the winter transfer portal, the action is already heating up. Virginia Tech has seen some key players enter the portal but received positive news with quarterbacks Pop Watson and Kyron Drones committing to return for the 2025 season. However, it’s still uncertain who their primary targets will be.
The Hokies are losing most of their top wide receivers, as well as running backs Malachi Thomas and Bhayshul Tuten. On the bright side, the tight-end room will bring back some experienced players. With 2025 shaping up as a make-or-break year for head coach Brent Pry, the former Penn State defensive coordinator is expected to take an aggressive approach in the portal.
Virginia Tech to host UCF transfer tight end
Virginia Tech’s tight-end group currently features Benji Gosnell and Harrison Saint Germain, both of whom bring experience to the position. However, with quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson set to return, head coach Brent Pry should prioritize adding another weapon at tight end. According to Pete Nakos of On3, the Hokies are arranging a visit with Central Florida transfer Randy Pittman.
Pittman, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound native of Panama City, Florida, was a three-star recruit and ranked as the 38th-best tight end in the 2023 class by On3. During his freshman season at Central Florida, Pittman recorded 32 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns. His standout performance came in a 56-12 win over Arizona on November 2, where he posted five catches for 80 yards, including a 48-yard Hail Mary touchdown to close the first half.
Nakos also reports that Pittman is considering visits to Florida State and Arizona State, in addition to Virginia Tech. With his size and playmaking ability, Pittman could be an excellent fit for offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen’s system in 2025.
