The Cincinnati Reds reached agreements with all eight of their arbitration-eligible players before Thursday’s deadline, including key relievers Alexis Díaz and Sam Moll. However, late Thursday, MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Reds are showing interest in former Los Angeles Angels closer Carlos Estévez.
Although the free-agent relief market has been relatively quiet this offseason, the Baltimore Orioles’ recent one-year, $10 million deal with Andrew Kittredge might spark more movement among top-tier relievers, potentially prompting Cincinnati to act.
Reds Rumors: Carlos Estévez on Cincinnati’s Radar
Estévez had an impressive 2023 season, earning an All-Star nod with the Angels. The right-hander made 63 appearances, recording 31 saves over 62 ⅓ innings. In 2024, he began the season with the Angels but was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the deadline. Across both teams, Estévez compiled a 4-5 record with a 2.45 ERA and 26 saves.
The Reds’ bullpen underwent changes this winter, including trading setup man Fernando Cruz to the New York Yankees for catcher Jose Trevino. While Sam Moll is a reliable lefty for high-leverage situations, the addition of a late-inning right-hander like Estévez could complement Alexis Díaz and address a critical need for Cincinnati.
Competitive Market for Estévez
The Reds face competition for Estévez, particularly from the Toronto Blue Jays, who have the financial resources to outbid Cincinnati. Historically, it has been challenging for the Reds to attract high-profile free agents, but their current roster and opportunities might appeal to the 32-year-old reliever.
With several high-quality relievers like Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, and Kirby Yates still available on the free-agent market, the Reds could have options if Estévez signs elsewhere. For now, Cincinnati’s pursuit of Estévez signals their commitment to strengthening the bullpen as they gear up for the 2025 season.
