The Juan Soto sweepstakes has reportedly narrowed to five active contenders: the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox. Each team offers unique advantages to entice Soto, but the Yankees and Mets have been considered frontrunners since the start. The Yankees, Soto’s current team, are known for winning bidding wars for star players, while the Mets, led by MLB’s wealthiest owner Steve Cohen, are difficult to outbid.
However, Andy Martino of SNY recently revealed an unexpected twist. According to Martino, the top bidder for Soto may not be the Mets, Yankees, or Red Sox. “The widespread belief among bidders is that Toronto will present the highest offer,” Martino reported. While skepticism remains about Soto joining the Blue Jays, a source clarified that Soto is open to playing for any team in the final bidding.
This potential development shifts the dynamics of the sweepstakes significantly. If Toronto outbids Cohen and the Mets, it could eliminate New York from the race entirely and increase pressure on Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. Should the Yankees fail to retain Soto, they could face the prospect of seeing their 26-year-old superstar paired with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the AL East for the next decade or more.
