The Texas Longhorns have experienced significant losses along the defensive front this offseason due to departures through the NCAA Transfer Portal, with four players opting to leave Austin for new opportunities.
In total, the Longhorns are set to lose eight defensive linemen. Seniors Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, Bill Norton, and Jermayne Lole are expected to head to the NFL, while Sydir Mitchell, Aaron Bryant, Jaray Bledsoe, and Tia Savea have chosen to transfer.
Despite these setbacks, Texas is making progress in rebuilding its defensive line. The team has signed three highly regarded freshmen: five-star recruit Justus Terry and four-stars Josiah Sharma and Myron Charles. However, adding experienced players to the roster remains a priority.
Reports from Inside Texas indicate the Longhorns are addressing this need by pursuing Purdue transfer defensive tackle Cole Brevard, who is scheduled to visit Austin on Friday. Brevard, a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining, had a strong season with the Boilermakers, recording 19 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.
Brevard has appeared in 37 games over three seasons at Purdue, following a brief stint at Penn State during his freshman year. Originally from Carmel, Indiana, Brevard was a four-star recruit in the 2020 class, ranked as the No. 206 player nationally, No. 19 defensive tackle, and the top prospect in Indiana by the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
If Texas secures the 6-foot-3, 333-pound lineman, he would likely become a key contributor to the defensive front rotation. However, given the substantial turnover at the position, the Longhorns are expected to bring in multiple transfers to address the gaps.
