FRISCO – Security is tight at The Star in Frisco—even for members of the media and little-known hopefuls vying for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys’ 90-man roster.
Getting access requires more than just ambition. You need clearance, an invitation—or at the very least, a key.
Perrion Winfrey finally got all three.
The Cowboys are continuing their recent trend of tapping into UFL talent, as sources confirm the team is signing defensive tackle Winfrey following an impressive season with the Birmingham Stallions.
Winfrey made a name for himself at Oklahoma before being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. After one year in Cleveland, he was waived and later joined the New York Jets in 2023. His time there was limited, as he spent much of the season on injured reserve or the practice squad. Free agency eventually led him to the UFL, where he worked to revive his career.
However, the 6-foot-3, 290-pound lineman’s journey has not been without controversy. Off-field concerns—including a reported incident in which he allegedly pulled a gun on a woman in Cleveland—led to his release from the Browns.
Now, he arrives in Dallas with some familiarity already in place. While on the Jets’ practice squad, Winfrey worked under current Cowboys defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton and alongside veteran DT Solomon Thomas—another Cowboys offseason addition.
Winfrey is hoping for a fresh start and is already making an impression by arriving early to train at The Star. Dallas has been working to shore up its run defense after last season’s struggles, bringing in draft picks Jay Toia and Tommy Akingbesote, signing Thomas, and re-signing rising star Osa Odighizuwa.
He’ll head into training camp fighting for a spot on the final 53-man roster and aiming to provide added depth on the interior line. His past connections could help, but ultimately, Winfrey has to prove he belongs in the league.
On social media, he shared his excitement about arriving at team facilities: “Soon as I got the code I was innit lol.”
Clearly, he’s eager to get to work—and if all goes well, he could follow in the footsteps of KaVontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey as another UFL product to thrive in Dallas.
And for the Cowboys, that kind of upside is hard to ignore.
