According to Editor-in-Chief David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Oilers are working toward new contracts for veterans Connor Brown and Corey Perry, both set to become unrestricted free agents. Pagnotta noted that while final touches are still being put on Frederic’s new deal, Edmonton is also looking to retain Brown and Perry. Talks with Brown are expected to ramp up soon, and it’s been revealed he played through the Stanley Cup Final with a fractured toe.

- To overcome Florida’s relentless physical play and suffocating forecheck, the Oilers need more speed and edge up front. The 2024 playoff squad had more of that, thanks to the presence of power forwards like Warren Foegele, Dylan Holloway, and Zach Hyman, along with speedster Ryan McLeod. While this year’s team improved in structure and puck movement, it lacked the same burst and intensity up front.
- Brown may not rack up points or deliver crushing hits, but before injuries—a fractured toe and later a head knock against Dallas—he brought noticeable speed and grit. Much like Hyman, he raises his physical game come playoff time. If he’s open to a value deal, he’s worth retaining, especially given his reliable penalty killing.
- Perry was solid in the regular season and elevated his play when it mattered most. Outside of Hyman, he was arguably Edmonton’s most dependable winger at even strength in the playoffs.
