Leeds United’s pursuit of Sean Longstaff may get a potential boost, as his current club Newcastle United are reportedly targeting a high-profile alternative in the same position.
Leeds are keen on signing the 27-year-old midfielder ahead of their return to the Premier League, but have had three bids turned down by Newcastle. Longstaff is believed to be open to a summer move after finding consistent playing time hard to come by under Eddie Howe.
Despite their strong interest, Leeds and Newcastle have yet to agree on a transfer fee. Longstaff featured in Saturday’s pre-season clash with Carlisle United, where he scored the opening goal in a 4-0 win.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are reportedly exploring a move for England international Conor Gallagher, who joined Atletico Madrid from Chelsea last summer for £36 million. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Atletico are willing to listen to offers for the 25-year-old, and Newcastle are said to be giving serious thought to a potential bid.
However, while the Shields Gazette confirms Newcastle’s long-term interest in Gallagher, they also report that no formal offer has been made and suggestions of a serious pursuit have been downplayed. Nonetheless, any incoming midfield signing could clear the path for Longstaff’s departure, aiding Leeds’ efforts to secure his signature.
