As trade rumors continue to swirl around Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson this offseason, NHL analysts are beginning to explore potential landing spots that could be mutually beneficial. One intriguing possibility? The Edmonton Oilers.
The Oilers are fresh off consecutive Stanley Cup Final defeats and are reportedly looking to strengthen their blue line. TSN analyst Travis Yost suggested Edmonton as a potential fit for Karlsson, even proposing a deal that would send Darnell Nurse to Pittsburgh in return.
“Why Edmonton?” Yost wrote. “At first glance, adding another offensive weapon to this already potent Western Conference team may seem unnecessary. But there are two good reasons to consider it.
“First, the Oilers could address a challenging contract situation through a larger deal. Second, stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would still benefit from having another elite playmaker—especially one on defense.”
A trade of this nature could not only help Edmonton resolve cap concerns but also improve their postseason performance on the back end. Karlsson, 35, still offers elite offensive value, averaging 70 points per 82 games over the past three seasons. Although his \$11.5 million cap hit is hefty, the Penguins could retain part of his salary to facilitate a move.
Nurse, 30, is younger but coming off a down year with just 33 points in 76 games. His contract, worth \$9.25 million annually through 2030, has become a sticking point in Edmonton.
Karlsson does have a full no-move clause, though it’s believed he could waive it under the right circumstances.
“He joined the Penguins just as they seem to be trending downward,” NHL insider Chris Johnston noted. “I’d imagine Karlsson’s patience may wear thin before long.”
