On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced they’ve signed left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera to a major league deal.
To make room on the active roster, the team optioned right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks to Triple-A Indianapolis. They also designated right-hander Hunter Stratton for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
Cabrera, 28, has pitched in 15 games this season with the Cubs and Mets, posting a 6.35 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 17 innings. He struggled in his final two outings with Chicago, giving up three runs in an inning on back-to-back days before being designated for assignment.
Across his seven-year MLB career, Cabrera has made 287 appearances—most of them with the Cardinals between 2019 and 2023. Originally signed by the Rays out of the Dominican Republic, he was traded to St. Louis in 2018 as part of the deal for Tommy Pham. Last season, he pitched in 69 games for the Blue Jays and recorded a 3.59 ERA.
The Pirates had a need for a left-handed reliever, with both Tim Mayza and Ryan Borucki currently on the injured list. Caleb Ferguson is the only healthy lefty in the bullpen at the moment.
Darrell-Hicks recently made his MLB debut with Pittsburgh, tossing two scoreless innings in Milwaukee.
Stratton has appeared in three major league games this season, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Drafted by the Pirates in the 16th round in 2017, he’s spent his entire big-league career with the organization. He elected free agency in each of the past two offseasons but re-signed on minor league deals both times.
