Sunderland have completed the signing following his exit from Atletico Madrid, with the Mozambique international penning a deal reportedly worth €38 million.
The 31-year-old departs the Metropolitano after racking up 103 appearances across four seasons with Atletico, including 30 outings in the 2024–25 campaign as the club secured a third-place finish in La Liga and reached the Champions League round of 16.
While primarily deployed at left-back, Reinildo also featured as a left-sided centre-back and occasionally in midfield for Atletico. For Mozambique, he’s often utilized as a central defender.
His European journey began with Benfica B in 2016, before moving to Portuguese side B-SAD in 2018. In July 2019, he joined Lille, playing a key role in their 2020–21 Ligue 1 title win, appearing 35 times as they edged out PSG. Reinildo went on to make 87 appearances for the French side before his transfer to Atletico in January 2022.
He now becomes Sunderland’s third addition since earning promotion to the Premier League, joining Noah Sadiki from Union Saint-Gilloise and Habib Diarra from Strasbourg. The club also confirmed the permanent signing of Enzo Le Fée from Roma following his successful loan spell.
