For the first time in over a month, Joseph Woll returned to the ice with the Toronto Maple Leafs at Monday’s practice, receiving an outpouring of support from his teammates.
“It was awesome,” said Anthony Stolarz, who has started seven of the season’s first nine games in Woll’s absence. “Just seeing his infectious smile back in the net—we were talking about how much we missed our goalie hugs.”
Woll, who did not speak to the media, has been on a personal leave since September 23 for undisclosed reasons. Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving said the focus is now on getting the 27-year-old goaltender back up to game speed. A conditioning stint with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL is expected.
“Number one, it’s great to have him back,” Treliving said. “I won’t get into the details of his leave. We’ll let Joe speak when he’s ready. Right now, it’s about helping him get comfortable and ready to play.”
Woll last played in Game 7 of the Leafs’ second-round playoff loss to the Florida Panthers in May. While he readjusts to the NHL, the team plans to provide full support. According to Treliving, Woll has been skating every other day in recent weeks. Although he is eligible to return from long-term injured reserve this Saturday, he is not expected to be ready by then.
Veteran teammates will provide guidance as he reintegrates. Former captain John Tavares emphasized the importance of balance, saying Woll “just wants to be part of the group and be himself.” Defenseman Morgan Rielly added that locker room support is a key part of playing a team sport.
Stolarz, who has shouldered an unusually heavy workload this season, expressed relief at Woll’s return. The 31-year-old has struggled under the increased responsibilities, posting just two wins in seven starts with a .885 save percentage. “Not too worried about numbers right now,” he said. “It’s about continuing to grow and get better. I feel good in there and I’m making solid saves, but need to make a few more each game.”
Head coach Craig Berube has tried to ease Stolarz’s load, giving him a break over the weekend and recalling Dennis Hildeby to back up Cayden Primeau in the team’s win over the Buffalo Sabres. With the Leafs currently at 4-4-1, every bit of rest helps as Woll works toward returning to NHL action.
