The UCF Knights are unexpectedly in search of a new head coach after Gus Malzahn left Orlando, Florida, to take on the role of offensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles. Malzahn’s departure comes amid increasing pressure following two consecutive losing seasons. Among the potential replacements, one candidate has sparked significant debate among UCF fans.
Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports has highlighted a few notable options, including former Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen, Liberty’s Jamey Chadwell, and Texas State’s GJ Kinne. Meanwhile, On3.com‘s Andy Staples has suggested Tulane’s Jon Sumrall as another possibility. However, it’s the prospect of a reunion with former UCF head coach Scott Frost that has generated the most buzz. Lassan speculated, “Could UCF look to its past for its next head coach?” Frost previously led the Knights to a 19-7 record over two seasons (2016-17), including a remarkable 13-0 campaign in his final year.
Frost’s stint at Nebraska, where he signed a seven-year, $35 million deal in 2018, was less successful. The Cornhuskers struggled to a 16-31 record under his leadership before his dismissal. Frost is currently serving as an analyst for the Rams. Reflecting on his potential return, former UCF player Rashard Causey commented, “Scott Frost still got the same number… just saying @TerryMohajirAD.”
