The Philadelphia Phillies need to take action if they’re serious about winning a World Series in 2025. With one of the most talented rosters in MLB, they might only need a few strategic moves to push them over the top.
However, making those moves isn’t easy, especially with contracts becoming more expensive. Still, Philadelphia has the financial flexibility to spend, and they can’t afford to waste another year of contention without being aggressive, especially since their championship window seemed like it could last for nearly a decade.
One area of concern is their bullpen, particularly if Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez leave. Reports suggest they might, which raises questions about the backend of their bullpen, especially in a competitive division and league.
Losing a game or two due to a weak bullpen could be the reason the Phillies miss the postseason or fall short in October. This makes it crucial for the front office to pursue a pitcher like Tanner Scott, who could step in as their closer in high-pressure situations.
Although they showed interest in Scott at the trade deadline, they opted for Estevez instead. Now, with Scott back on the market, the Phillies need to act, though it will require financial commitment. Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball predicts Scott could sign a four-year, $60 million deal with Philadelphia.
Scott is a top-tier reliever, capable of dominating left-handed batters, and could fill the closer role or serve as an elite setup man. His potential value is clear, even if he’s looking for a deal that could approach Josh Hader’s five-year, $95 million contract. However, Scott might settle for a four-year deal, which would still be relatively expensive by bullpen standards.
With Scott still available, the Phillies need to make their move, especially after his unhittable performance in 2024. He would be a perfect addition to their bullpen.
