Warriors forwards coach Tom Cruse believes Caldy’s biggest threats come from their powerful pack and the influence of fly-half Kieran Wilkinson.
The Warriors travel north this Saturday for what could be their toughest test so far, facing a Caldy side that have won four of their first five matches to sit second in the Championship Rugby standings.
“They’ve leaned heavily on their pack this week,” said Cruse. “It’s a great challenge for me as forwards coach and for the group to see where we’re at.
“At the same time, they’ve got a quality 10 in Kieran Wilkinson — he’ll sit in the pocket, kick smartly into corners, and likes to get the ball moving. He’s experienced from his time with Leicester and someone Matt Everard knows well. He can really get their backline firing.
“They’re dangerous across the park, but their pack is a big focal point.”
Caldy suffered their first defeat of the campaign last weekend, losing 34–27 to Cornish Pirates after opening the season with four straight wins. Cruse doesn’t expect that setback to dent their confidence.
“It’s a different game every week,” he said. “Like us, they’ll come in on Monday with fresh energy regardless of the result. They’ve had some strong wins — especially away at Nottingham, which is a tough place to go.
“They’re a good side, and their position in the table shows that. It’ll be a new challenge for some of our lads, but we’ve got players who’ve been there before and know what to expect.”
Cruse also noted that the conditions at Caldy’s home ground could influence the contest.
“It’s quite an open pitch, so the weather can have an impact,” he added. “They use it to their advantage — much like we do at Sixways. It’s a ground they see as a fortress, backed by passionate supporters and players who know how to make it work for them.”
