When the 2024 NFL season concludes and free agency begins, the Washington Commanders will have one of the largest budgets in the league, trailing only three other teams in available cap space.
A potential top target? Star safety from the Arizona Cardinals.
Bleacher Report recently named Baker as a free agency candidate for the Commanders, and the move would make sense. With Jeremy Chinn playing on a one-year deal, Washington could seek a long-term upgrade in the secondary, and Baker fits the bill.
Baker is a six-time Pro Bowler and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2017 (as a special teamer) and again in 2020. Over 115 career games, he has recorded 837 tackles, seven interceptions, and six forced fumbles, consistently ranking among the league’s top tacklers.
As noted by Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder, “The six-time Pro Bowler is a playmaker who can line up all over the field.” His versatility could be especially valuable for Washington, given the team’s struggles at cornerback.
The primary concern with signing Baker would be his experience level, as he’s set to enter his ninth NFL season. However, Washington has shown a willingness to invest in veteran leadership, as seen with the additions of Bobby Wagner and Zach Ertz this year, even if those players are nearing the end of their careers.
Whether or not they land Baker, it’s clear the Commanders are poised to target high-impact free agents as they aim to capitalize on their window as NFC contenders.
