The Western Bulldogs have confirmed that assistant coach Matt Spangher will leave the club to take up a new role with Hawthorn this week.
Spangher, 38, joined the Bulldogs in 2021 and has played a key role in developing some of the AFL’s most dynamic forwards during his tenure. Earlier this year, he was recognised with the AFL Coaches Association’s Phil Walsh Memorial Scholarship for his commitment to coaching excellence.
Bulldogs General Manager of Coaching and Performance, Matt Egan, commended Spangher for his influence and professionalism.
“Matt formed strong connections with our staff and players, particularly within the forward group,” Egan said. “He has a genuine passion for people and development, and his impact will continue to be felt long after his departure.
“Although it’s disappointing to lose someone of Matt’s calibre, this is an exciting opportunity for him to take on a more strategic role at Hawthorn. We wish him every success and thank him for his outstanding contribution over the past four years.”
The Bulldogs will begin the process of appointing a new assistant coach in the coming days.
