Max Fried’s addition on Tuesday gave New York a strong start, but there are still gaps to be filled, particularly in the lineup. A slugger at first base, an outfielder, and a versatile infielder would all be useful to the Bronx Bombers. The third baseman did not identify the Yankees as one of the teams he would waive his no-trade clause for, despite numerous reports suggesting the Yankees would be interested in St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado. Alex Bregman, a free agent third baseman for the Houston Astros, is the next best infield choice, despite his high cost.
According to a recent article by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, there is increasing speculation that Bregman and the Yankees are connected. According to Spotrac, Bregman is expected to sign a four-year contract worth $119 million; however, the length of his real contract will be much longer and cost much more. In the upcoming weeks, he might sign a contract worth about $200 million, according to the reports.
Despite Houston’s strong efforts to re-sign the third baseman, the Astros are unlikely to prevail in a bidding war because the Yankees and Boston Red Sox are vying for his services. By signing Bregman, the Yankees would be able to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base, freeing up the Astros great to play third base. Although Bregman and the Yankees have a long history of animosity, I’m sure the Yankee fans will be able to put their shredded past behind them if he moves to the Bronx and contributes to victories.
