Nicolae Ciucă, the PNL candidate for the Romanian presidency, resigned from his leadership position immediately after the election results were announced. In his place, Ilie Bolojan, the president of Bihor County Council, was appointed as interim leader.
Dan Motreanu, Emil Boc, Ciprian Ciucu, and Valeriu Iftime were confirmed as interim first vice-presidents of the PNL.
Ilie Bolojan stated at a press conference, “Today, we decided that for the second round of the presidential elections, given the two candidates, PNL will support the pro-European candidacy of Mrs. Elena Lasconi without any negotiations. PNL is the promoter of this direction.”
Following Ciucă’s election loss, Valeriu Iftime posted a strong message on his Facebook page, calling for the resignation of the party leadership. He urged, “The resignation of the National Liberal Party leadership is URGENT! Those who led Mr. Ciucă’s campaign must step down and allow PNL to regain relevance for the parliamentary elections, or we risk that the current strategy will lead the party into a major crisis and we will become completely irrelevant in the political arena.”
