As multiple NFL teams form coaching staffs under new head coaches, other teams are seeking assistants to fill roles under returning head coaches.
One team in need of a new offensive coordinator is the Houston Texans, who recently parted ways with Bobby Slowik after he held the position for the past two seasons.
The Texans have reportedly interviewed Thad Lewis, an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for the role. This could create a tough situation for the Bucs, who have already lost Liam Coen.
“Potential loss for the Bucs as they search for their own OC,” Greg Auman of FOX Sports shared on X.
Coen seemed set to return to the Buccaneers with a new contract but ultimately took the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars instead.
Losing another key offensive assistant could be a challenge for Tampa Bay’s head coach Todd Bowles.
Lewis has played a significant role in helping quarterback Baker Mayfield revitalize his career after previous struggles with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers. Mayfield’s performance over the past two years has exceeded expectations, with 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns in 2023, followed by an even more impressive 4,500 yards and 41 touchdown passes this season.
The Houston Texans have an exciting offensive lineup, including quarterback C.J. Stroud, wide receivers Tank Dell and Nico Collins, and running back Joe Mixon.
They finished the regular season with a 10-7 record, advancing to the divisional round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year, though they were defeated by the Super Bowl-bound Kansas City Chiefs.
